Part 1: The “Before” State: The Pain & Frustration
Aine came to the gym with a clear and deeply personal goal: to find a space that focused on health, not harm. Having previously struggled with compulsive exercise and disordered eating, her past gym experiences were part of the problem, not the solution.
Her single biggest frustration? Gyms where the focus was on burning calories or changing appearance. “As someone who had previously struggled with compulsive exercise and related disordered eating, I was really looking for the complete opposite of this,” she explains. She needed an environment free from those triggers to protect her recovery and rebuild a positive relationship with movement.
This need impacted her entire approach to fitness. She wanted to feel good, get stronger, and improve performance, but previous environments made that impossible. The constant focus on metrics and aesthetics was counterproductive to her wellbeing, leaving her without a safe, supportive place to achieve her genuine health goals.
Before finding this gym, Aine had experienced the standard gym model. Those other solutions didn’t work because they often reinforced the very mindset she was trying to heal. They lacked the nuanced understanding and supportive structure necessary for someone in recovery.
The decision to seek something different was proactive and protective. “I was in recovery when I started with John and wanted it to stay that way.” The “final straw” was the ongoing search for a gym that wouldn’t jeopardize her hard-won progress.
Her secret worry was clear: “From an over-exercise perspective,” she needed a structure that would prevent old habits. She was worried about falling back into compulsive patterns if left to her own devices in a traditional gym setting.
Part 2: The Discovery & Decision – Why This Gym?
What set this approach apart was its foundational philosophy, which aligned perfectly with Aine’s needs from the very first conversation.
“The environment John has created in his gym does not centre on any of the above, which is exactly what I needed,” she says. The focus was immediately on her priorities—health, strength, and performance—in a judgement-free zone.
This bespoke, client-centred approach built her confidence. “This was just my personal priority when coming to John, but he will tailor whatever you are looking for into a bespoke plan, focusing on what you want to get from your time spent at the gym.”
Deciding to join felt like finding a sanctuary. She was hopeful that this could be the supportive, pressure-free environment she needed to exercise sustainably and positively.
Part 3: The Journey & Transformation – The Process
The transformation began with the relief of finding a safe structure. The first positive sign was the comfort and lack of anxiety she felt in the gym environment itself.
The part of the program Aine found most valuable was the tailored plan and the removed pressure. “He gives you a plan and you follow it, which I really liked. The onus was taken off me to plan what exercises to do and how many… following a set plan made it much less likely for me to try to do more.”
A key “aha!” moment was experiencing support without pressure. “John and the lads are always so encouraging; trying to get the best out of you but never pushing you too far.” This balance was crucial for her trust and progress. She also deeply valued the respectful approach to metrics: “He offered me the option of having my measurements taken… but there was absolutely no problem when I chose not to.”
Part 4: The “After” State – The New Life
Aine’s results are profound, centering on sustainable wellbeing and a renewed love for movement.
Her most proud measurable results are feeling “100% stronger and healthier physically.”
The non-scale victories, however, are transformative. “My relationship with exercise and the gym is much more sustainable and healthier,” she states. “I now have a much clearer idea of what a normal and safe amount of exercise looks like for me.” This clarity and peace are her greatest achievements.
The difference in how she feels is holistic. “I 100% feel stronger and healthier physically in myself—without it coming at the expense of my life or mental wellbeing.”
She also celebrates the powerful sense of community: “The community he has built among the people who attend is one of the reasons I love going. Everyone is so welcoming.” The semi-private model, with a maximum of six people, fostered this supportive atmosphere.
Aine’s Verdict on the Gym Environment
“I would say John’s gym is a really nice environment for people who are trying to re-introduce exercise and maintain a healthy mindset with it while doing so.”
She credits her success to the unique atmosphere: “I think this is without doubt a testament to John and the atmosphere he has created within his gym.”
